Your Brain Wasn’t Built to Read

Why books literally rewire how you think

Words I like: The truest measure of intelligence is a persons ability to get what they want out of life

Pablo’s Perspective:

Every time you read a sentence, your brain pulls off a miracle. In less than half a second, it recognizes shapes, turns them into sounds, connects meaning, and builds an idea.

And if you think about it, that’s wild… and what’s even wilder is that our brains weren’t built to do this.

Reading is unnatural. Humans have been speaking for hundreds of thousands of years, but reading only showed up about 5,000 years ago.

The more you read, the stronger that network gets. Reading doesn’t just make you “smarter.” It literally rewires your brain improving memory, focus, and reasoning. That’s why people who read consistently think more clearly as they age.

When you read, your brain simulates life. You don’t just understand the words you feel them.

Your brain even predicts the words before your eyes confirm them. It basically feels like hallucinating but it’s just your brain building reality in real time.

That mental workout is exactly what keeps the brain sharp.

But… it all depends on attention.

So, does doom-scrolling social media or skimming emails count?

No.

Not even close. Your brain isn’t building circuits or simulating life it’s just reacting.

Reading is one of the last places to slow down, stay present, and think deeply.

Reading is actually mental strength training!

Did you know? 💡

Fiction literally trains empathy. When you read about someone else’s thoughts, emotions, or pain, the same brain regions light up as if you were experiencing it yourself. Reading is a place you can live hundreds of lives.
